Baikal – Alaska is the expedition along the trade route that used to connect Siberia with Russian settlements in Alaska in XIX c.
The route of the expedition is unique. The last time it was undertaken was 150 years ago. The expedition starts in Irkutsk on May 20, 2016 and finishes in Fort Ross Historic State Park (California) on July 20, 2016.
The project has several goals:
• To repeat the journey of the explorers, merchants and hunters to Russian America. To gain attention of the public to the history of the Russian Far East and Russian America.
• To create the most stunning expeditionary route in the world through 7 natural reserves: Lake Baikal, the Lena river, Yakutia, the Kurils islands, Kamchatka, the Aleutian islands, Alaska. To promote the touristic potential of Baikal Region and the Russian Far East.
• To inspire entrepreneurs to realize projects in Siberia and Russian Far East and assist the cooperation between Siberia and Alaska.
A documentary and a photo book are going to be made after the expedition in autumn 2016.
